How to choose a reverse osmosis water treatment system? Solutions for desalination of high-salinity brackish water.

Inner Mongolia is a vast region where most industrial, mining, chemical, and heating enterprises primarily rely on groundwater, mine water, and brackish surface water. This water is generally characterized by high salinity, high hardness, high suspended solids, and significant water quality fluctuations, representing typical high-salt, brackish water conditions in Northwest China. Standard reverse osmosis (RO) equipment has poor compatibility, and long-term operation can easily lead to membrane element scaling and clogging, decreased desalination rates, substandard effluent, and high equipment failure rates, severely impacting the stability of industrial water supply. Therefore, enterprises purchasing RO water treatment systems in Inner Mongolia cannot blindly apply generic models; they must customize the selection based on local water quality and the harsh northern climate.

The first step in the selection process must be to match the core process to local water quality data, which is fundamental to ensuring effective desalination. Water quality varies significantly across different regions of Inner Mongolia. In some eastern areas, the raw water quality is moderate with low TDS values, making conventional single-stage RO water treatment systems sufficient for equipment cleaning, recirculation, and general industrial water needs, offering better cost-effectiveness. In western industrial and mining areas such as Ordos, Wuhai, and Alashan, the groundwater and mine water have extremely high mineralization, classifying them as severely brackish water. Single-stage reverse osmosis desalination capacity is insufficient, necessitating the use of a two-stage reverse osmosis water treatment system paired with fouling-resistant brackish water-specific membrane elements. This achieves a comprehensive desalination rate exceeding 99%, thoroughly removing salt, calcium and magnesium ions, heavy metals, and other impurities from the water, stably producing industrial-grade pure water that meets standards.

Strengthening the pretreatment system is the core and key to treating high-salinity brackish water in Inner Mongolia, and also crucial for extending equipment lifespan. Locally, the raw cement, sand, colloids, and hardness impurities exceed standards. If the pretreatment system is rudimentary, it can easily lead to rapid fouling and failure of the reverse osmosis membrane, significantly increasing operation and maintenance costs. A reverse osmosis water treatment system adapted to the conditions in Inner Mongolia must be equipped with a multi-stage enhanced pretreatment system as standard. This system uses a multi-media filter to intercept suspended impurities and an activated carbon filter to adsorb residual chlorine and organic matter. For high-hardness raw water, a fully automatic softening device is added to reduce water hardness in advance. For the high turbidity of mine water, a precision filtration device can be added to comprehensively purify the incoming water quality and protect the core membrane components from the source.

Adapting to the characteristics of the northern climate and upgrading the equipment for local conditions are key considerations for selecting systems in Inner Mongolia. Inner Mongolia experiences harsh winters and large temperature differences between day and night, making ordinary water treatment equipment prone to problems such as pipe freezing and cracking, equipment downtime, and decreased operating efficiency. A high-quality reverse osmosis water treatment system must be equipped with pipe insulation, overall antifreeze, and sealed dustproof features, suitable for low-temperature operating environments such as outdoor spaces and simple factory buildings. Simultaneously, a fully automatic intelligent control system is preferred, supporting automatic flushing, real-time water quality monitoring, and automatic high and low pressure protection. It requires no dedicated personnel and can operate continuously and stably 24 hours a day, meeting the uninterrupted production needs of industrial and mining enterprises.

A complete desalination solution for high-salinity brackish water in Inner Mongolia's industrial sector employs an integrated, customized process combining enhanced pretreatment, a fouling-resistant reverse osmosis unit, an intelligent control system, and freeze protection. For mildly brackish water, a single-stage fouling-resistant reverse osmosis system is used to meet basic industrial water needs. For heavily saline brackish water and high-end process water applications, a two-stage reverse osmosis deep desalination process is employed, ensuring stable and compliant effluent quality. This system is widely adaptable to various industrial scenarios, including coal mine reuse, chemical production, power plant boiler feedwater, and heat exchange station feedwater. The entire system is tailored to the unique water quality and climate conditions of Northwest China, balancing desalination effectiveness with energy efficiency, resulting in high water resource utilization and lower operation and maintenance costs.
