Reverse Osmosis Equipment

What water quality issues should be considered when selecting industrial reverse osmosis pure water equipment?

Industrial production in Inner Mongolia primarily utilizes groundwater and shallow surface water. Due to the unique geological and climatic conditions of Northwest China, local water quality differs significantly from that of inland areas, commonly exhibiting problems such as high salinity, high hardness, excessive iron and manganese, and high levels of suspended sediment. Many enterprises, when purchasing industrial reverse osmosis (RO) pure water equipment, directly apply generic standard models, ignoring the specific water quality conditions in Inner Mongolia. This results in problems such as rapid scaling and clogging of RO membranes, a continuous decline in desalination rates, substandard effluent quality, and frequent equipment failures, significantly increasing operation and maintenance costs. Therefore, the core of selecting industrial RO pure water equipment for Inner Mongolia is to specifically address various local water quality issues and customize equipment configuration and process solutions based on water quality parameters.

First and foremost, the issue of high TDS and high salinity needs to be considered, as this is the most critical characteristic of Inner Mongolia's water quality. Groundwater in most industrial mines and industrial parks in Inner Mongolia is typically brackish water, with high dissolved salt content and TDS values generally far exceeding conventional standards. In some areas, the TDS can reach 1200-1800 mg/L. Ordinary single-stage reverse osmosis (RO) equipment has limited desalination capacity and cannot handle high-salinity water. Long-term operation can lead to excessive salt content in the effluent, failing to meet the pure water requirements of industries such as food processing, chemical processing, and equipment cleaning. To address this water quality issue, in high-salinity areas, ordinary single-stage equipment must be abandoned, and dual-stage reverse osmosis pure water equipment must be prioritized. Through a two-stage deep desalination process, a stable and compliant desalination rate can be ensured, adapting to the high-salinity, brackish water conditions of Inner Mongolia.

Secondly, the problem of high water hardness and scaling must be addressed. Inner Mongolia's groundwater has extremely high calcium and magnesium ion content, resulting in severely excessive water hardness, which is a major cause of membrane element damage in reverse osmosis equipment. If raw water enters the RO system directly without hardness reduction treatment, calcium and magnesium ions will quickly precipitate on the membrane surface, forming hard scale that clogs the membrane pores, reduces permeability, and not only degrades the effluent quality but also causes premature membrane element failure. When selecting a reverse osmosis (RO) system, the pre-softening system should be matched to the hardness of the raw water. A fully automatic softening device should be used to pre-displace calcium and magnesium ions in the water, preventing scale buildup on the RO membrane at its source and significantly extending the lifespan of equipment consumables.

Simultaneously, the issues of excessive iron and manganese and turbidity due to sediment cannot be ignored. Groundwater in some mining areas and rural factories in Inner Mongolia not only has high salinity but also suffers from excessive iron and manganese ions, high sediment content during the flood season, turbidity, and numerous colloidal impurities. These impurities easily cause RO membrane fouling and blockage, leading to a continuous decrease in water production and increased operating pressure. When selecting a system, a comprehensive pretreatment system must be installed, including multi-media filters, activated carbon filters, and precision security filters, to effectively intercept sediment, suspended solids, and colloidal impurities, adsorb residual chlorine and some organic matter, and control the influent pollution index within the standard range, providing stable feed water conditions for the RO unit.

Finally, the compatibility with water quality fluctuations and low-temperature operating conditions must be considered. Inner Mongolia experiences significant diurnal temperature variations and distinct seasonal climates. Low winter temperatures reduce water activity, indirectly impacting the efficiency of reverse osmosis (RO) equipment. Furthermore, seasonal fluctuations in groundwater levels cause variations in salinity and turbidity. Therefore, when selecting equipment, sufficient treatment capacity must be considered to prevent substandard effluent due to water quality fluctuations. The equipment must also be adaptable to the low-temperature environment of northern China, incorporating antifreeze design to ensure stable operation year-round.(Click to learn more - Reverse Osmosis Equipment Prices: Comprehensive Analysis by Model and Configuration)

The selection of industrial reverse osmosis pure water equipment in Inner Mongolia cannot be based solely on price and tonnage. It must be tailored to the specific local conditions of high salinity, high hardness, numerous impurities, and significant water quality fluctuations. Precise matching of desalination processes, softening pretreatment, and impurity filtration systems is crucial to addressing various water quality issues and ensuring long-term stable operation and compliant effluent. This will truly reduce operating costs for enterprises and meet the needs of industrial pure water production.
