III. Different Pore Sizes
Ultrafiltration membrane is a microporous filter membrane with uniform pore size ranging from 0.001 to 0.02 micron. With appropriate pressure applied on one side, it screens solute molecules smaller than the pore size and separates particles with molecular weight over 500 Daltons and particle size larger than 10 nanometers.
The pore size of reverse osmosis membrane is only 1/100 of that of ultrafiltration membrane. Therefore, RO membrane can filter tiny organic pollutants such as chemical contaminants and pesticide residues that ultrafiltration cannot remove.
