What is the difference between RO membrane and ultrafiltration membrane in reverse osmosis equipment?

I. Different Working Principles

Before understanding RO membranes and ultrafiltration membranes in detail, it is necessary to clarify their working principles. When raw water enters the ultrafiltration pipeline, under the pressure difference on both sides of the membrane, small beneficial molecules pass through the tiny pores of the membrane and flow out as purified water. Impurities and macromolecular substances that cannot pass through are trapped on the membrane side, realizing solution purification, separation and concentration. It is suitable for water sources with moderate pollution and low hardness. Reverse osmosis technology, also known as RO membrane technology, allows water molecules to pass through the membrane under pressure while blocking impurities, thus separating pure water from contaminants. The RO membrane can remove heavy metals, organic matter, bacteria and residual chlorine from water. Meanwhile, it does not strip dissolved oxygen, producing fresh living water. It is especially ideal for water sources with high pollution and high hardness.

II. Different Filtration Accuracy

The filtration precision of ultrafiltration membrane is 0.01 micron. It can remove microorganisms, colloids, diatoms and other turbidity-causing substances. Featuring good hydrophilicity, long service life and strong pollution resistance, it retains beneficial minerals and is mainly used in kitchen water purifiers with large water output.

Reverse osmosis membrane has a filtration precision of 0.0001 micron, which is the highest among existing filter elements. It effectively filters harmful substances such as bacteria, heavy metals, organic matter, residual chlorine and colloids. The RO membrane delivers stable purified water, long service life, automatic Wastewater discharge, large water production capacity and safe drinking quality.

III. Different Pore Sizes

Ultrafiltration membrane is a microporous filter membrane with uniform pore size ranging from 0.001 to 0.02 micron. With appropriate pressure applied on one side, it screens solute molecules smaller than the pore size and separates particles with molecular weight over 500 Daltons and particle size larger than 10 nanometers.

The pore size of reverse osmosis membrane is only 1/100 of that of ultrafiltration membrane. Therefore, RO membrane can filter tiny organic pollutants such as chemical contaminants and pesticide residues that ultrafiltration cannot remove. It also functions in water softening, converting hard water into Water Softener Filter.
