Simply put, it's due to excessive iron and manganese. Groundwater contains ferrous ions (Fe2+), which are invisible and intangible. Upon contact with air, they oxidize into ferric ions (Fe3+), turning the water yellow. Manganese works similarly, oxidizing to black or reddish. Some wells also contain sediment, making the water even worse. Especially in rural areas like Guanzhong in Shaanxi, seven or eight out of ten wells have excessively high iron and manganese levels. In rural Northwest China, about 80% of privately dug wells have this water quality problem. In Liquan County, Xianyang, there lived a fish farmer named Mr. Zhang. He had an 80-meter-deep well, and the water he pumped was reddish-brown. He heard that installing a PP cotton filter would solve the problem, so he spent less than 2.000 yuan. After three months, the filter cartridges were completely clogged, and the water remained the same color. He then replaced it with a manganese sand filter, which helped for a while, but the problem returned after winter. By spring 2024. he had spent over 10.000 yuan on equipment alone, but the water was still undrinkable. When he talked to me, he was almost frantic, saying he should have just installed a reverse osmosis system from the start.
