Difference in Outflow Water: Adjusting Water Pressure Alone – First Check for Clogged Distributors
The distributor in a water softening system is like a showerhead. If half the holes are blocked, even high pressure won't distribute the water evenly. The resin layer is vigorously flushed, while the lower layers remain stagnant. The pressure gauge may appear normal, but the effective backwash area might be less than half. I can't say exactly how many people regularly clean their distributors, but in the cases I've seen, clogged distributors account for about 40% of incomplete backwashing issues. Let me share a case from a previous customer. In March 2025. a textile factory in Hanzhong had a 6-ton-per-hour water softening system that had never undergone deep cleaning in two years. They discovered the water hardness was exceeding the standard and assumed the resin was worn out and needed replacement. However, when our technicians arrived, they found the water distributor was 60% clogged, and the backwash water wasn't penetrating the resin layer at all. After cleaning the distributor, the water hardness dropped to below 0.03 mmol/L, eliminating the need for resin replacement. This saved a significant amount of money.

Insufficient Backwash Intensity Leads to Ineffective Cleaning
The backwash water volume and pressure must be sufficient. Many water softening systems, after prolonged use, develop scale buildup in the inlet pipes, reducing water flow and backwash intensity, preventing the resin layer from loosening. What appears to be backwashing is essentially just pouring water onto the resin. Another issue is resin compaction. Long-term lack of salt or uneven salt addition causes resin particles to clump together, forming hard lumps that water cannot dissolve. In this case, you need to check how often the resin in your water softening system needs replacing; severely compacted resin should be replaced promptly, rather than trying to tough it out.
