Reverse Osmosis Equipment

What to do if the factory well water has a high salt content? How to select industrial reverse osmosis equipment?

Most industrial, mining, aquaculture, and processing enterprises in Inner Mongolia rely on deep well groundwater as their production water source. Due to the region's unique geology and climate, the groundwater generally suffers from high salinity, high TDS (total dissolved solids), high hardness, and excessive sulfate and chloride ion levels, classifying it as typical brackish water. While the well water appears clear and transparent, long-term direct use for production, cooling, and boiler feedwater can easily cause equipment corrosion, pipe scaling, and decreased product quality. It can also lead to substandard water use and failure to pass environmental impact assessments. Faced with the widespread problem of high salinity in Inner Mongolian factory well water, industrial reverse osmosis equipment is currently the most stable and cost-effective comprehensive treatment solution.

To completely solve the problem of high salinity in well water, it is essential to understand the production hazards caused by excessive water quality. Many enterprises mistakenly believe that clear well water is usable, but in reality, the salt in Inner Mongolian groundwater is dissolved in the water and is invisible to the naked eye. Long-term circulation of high-salinity well water accelerates the corrosion of heat exchangers, cooling towers, and boiler pipes, producing large amounts of salt scale that clogs pipes, reduces heat exchange efficiency, and leads to a continuous increase in energy consumption. In the food, daily chemical, and precision manufacturing industries, high salinity directly affects product formula stability, leading to finished product defects and a decrease in yield. It's worth noting that ordinary filters and softening equipment can only remove sediment and calcium/magnesium hardness, but cannot remove salt and chloride ions from water. This is the core reason why many factories still experience saline and substandard water quality after treatment.

For the problem of high salinity in well water in factories in Inner Mongolia, industrial reverse osmosis equipment is the optimal solution. Reverse osmosis technology relies on the principle of high-pressure membrane sieving to effectively remove salt, heavy metals, inorganic salts, and colloidal impurities from water, achieving a desalination rate of over 98%. It can quickly convert high-salt brackish water into qualified industrial water. Compared to traditional processes such as distillation and ion exchange, industrial reverse osmosis equipment has lower energy consumption, higher automation, and no chemical pollution. It is suitable for the large-scale high-salinity groundwater conditions in Inner Mongolia and fully meets the needs of various scenarios such as factory production, equipment cooling, boiler feedwater, and cleaning water.

Given the characteristics of Inner Mongolia's well water—high salinity, high hardness, and numerous impurities—industrial reverse osmosis (RO) equipment cannot simply be generic models. Specific selection is crucial to avoid problems such as rapid membrane fouling, decreased desalination rates, and frequent downtime for maintenance. First, the process configuration must be chosen based on the well water's salinity. For plants with slightly elevated salinity and low TDS, a single-stage industrial RO system is sufficient, offering low cost and simple maintenance. However, for severely saline brackish water with high TDS, a two-stage RO system is necessary for deep desalination, ensuring long-term stable effluent quality.

Second, a robust pretreatment system is essential, a key factor in selecting equipment for Inner Mongolia. Inner Mongolian well water generally has high hardness and contains silt, iron, and manganese impurities. Directly introducing this water into the RO unit can easily damage the membranes, causing blockage and rendering the system unusable. For proper water quality selection, multi-media filtration, activated carbon filtration, and precision security filtration must be used. Plants with extremely poor water quality require the addition of softening devices to reduce water hardness and impurity content in advance, protecting the reverse osmosis membrane modules and significantly reducing equipment failure rates and maintenance costs.

Third, equipment specifications should be matched to the actual water consumption and operating conditions. Small processing plants and laboratories are suitable for 1-5 ton/hour small reverse osmosis equipment; medium-sized production lines and centralized water supply plants should use 5-20 ton equipment; large industrial and mining areas and chemical parks with high water consumption require high-flow-rate fully automatic industrial reverse osmosis equipment of 20 tons or more to ensure continuous and stable water supply 24 hours a day and avoid water shortages during peak periods.(DIEN is a manufacturer of pure water equipment, specializing in reverse osmosis and EDI ultrapure water equipment for factories.) Fully automatic intelligent control systems should be prioritized to achieve automatic flushing, water production, and shutdown, requiring no dedicated personnel and adapting to continuous production modes in factories.

Fourth, materials should be selected to suit the climate of Northwest China. Inner Mongolia experiences large temperature differences between day and night and has a dry climate. Therefore, equipment tanks and pipelines must be made of thickened, corrosion-resistant materials that are resistant to aging and low temperatures to prevent leaks, rust, and equipment aging during outdoor operation, ensuring stable operation of the equipment year-round.
